A legal contract in which a songwriter assigns to a publisher a controlling interest (ownership) to his or her songs written during the term of the contract for a fee. Issues such as the term of the agreement, other existing songs to be included (back-catalog), reversion rights, the amount of the advance, the recoupment terms, minimum delivery requirements, and the percentage of royalty income the songwriter will receive are all negotiable points.
