A producer is responsible for the creation of sound recordings of an artist or band’s music. A producer may engage in a wide range of activities like finding session musicians, coaching studio singers and musicians, as well as proposing changes to a song's arrangement or lyrics. Since producers have such an important role in the creation of songs and often compose all of the music (such as with Hip-hop beats) they can be treated as co-writers of a work. Producers can often collaborate in the initial songwriting process as well and therefore are part of the song's overall ownership share. In either case, if the producer has contributed as a songwriter, they can register with a PRO and collect songwriting royalties.
